Upward Bound is a college-preparatory program that started at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) on September 1, 1989. It serves 60 students enrolled in grades 9-12 from the Traverse City and Suttons Bay school districts. Students are eligible to participate in Upward Bound if they are first
generation college students, meet certain income criteria, and demonstrate the discipline needed for success in post-secondary education. Find out more on NMC's Upward Bound Web Page.
Local Upward Bound students participated in Listening to the River as part of their 6-week summer residential program.
With trips to the Peninsula Park at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula, Keystone Rapids on the Boardman River and various other spots within the Grand Traverse Bay Watershed, students braved 90+° heat as they collected photos, video and audio for use in the project's museum exhibit at Great Lakes Children's Museum and produced pieces for broadcast on Interlochen Public Radio.
